Treading water –
Born in to
The world
With two
Legs,
We are taught to
Swim
with fishes.
Treading water,
an essential tool –
to survive
in a foreign
realm.
But imagine,
The fish
Born in to
The world
With one
Fin.
Attempting to
Fathom
A world,
Where she
must walk
To survive.
Undaunted,
She leaps
Towards the surface.
Trying to catch a glimpse.
Trying to develop technique.
Only to leap on to the shoreline
And learn that a leap,
only works in the deep.
As she dries out on the sand,
The waves tease her –
They tickle, then poke and prod.
You had no reason to think
You could do it.
You had no reason to think
You’d belong.
And as she reflects
On the reason
She tried it,
As she remembers
The reason she dared
She’s reminded
Of treading water,
And how easy it is
Fail.
